As part of a search for economic lignite occurrences formed near the western edge of the Murray Basin, available drill hole data and regional aeromagnetic and gravity data were used to interpret the basement structure and to define areas favourable for such coal formation. 5 rotary mud holes (total 772 m) were drilled near Swan Reach, and hole 81MBR59 intersected a 10 cm thick lignite band at 118.8 m depth. The potential for finding a more significant development of lignite seams around the margins of the associated basement depression was considered to be low. No base metal or diamond - prospective geophysical targets were recognised from a consultant's review of the aeromagnetic data.
