The results of 1185 line km of aerial EM surveying carried out in the vicinity of Winnie Pinnie Dam, 85 km north-west of Port Augusta, using the Barringer INPUT system, have been interpreted as a possible means of identifying prospective Adelaidean subcrop which may host Mount Gunson type stratiform base metal deposits. The conductivity pattern now recognised gives a consistent correlation with known stratigraphy and structure, and indicates untested areas where low conductivities may represent ancient depositional settings conducive to sulphide accumulation. Subsequent drilling of 21 rotary percussion holes (WP31 - WP51) totalling 1039 m has proved the usefulness of the INPUT method for interpretation of bedrock lithology, but not for providing a reliable depth to, or thickness of, conductive subcrops, owing to the prevalence of saline groundwater lenses in the district. Significant base metal values were obtained from the Tapley Hill Formation in several areas.
