Extensive geophysical prospecting, an 8 hole percussion drill coring programme (477 m) and a 140 hole RAB drilling programme (1798 m) at the Lady Franklin prospect were not encouraging. Percussion drillhole 83WP2 intersected a zone of primary but subeconomic lead, copper, zinc and silver mineralization (galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and pyrrhotite) from 54-68 m depth adjacent to a marble - phyllite contact. Elsewhere (in holes 83WP4 and 83WP5), some anomalous gravity responses were explained solely by elevated basement topography, with no associated geochemical highs present. Only small amounts of sulphide (pyrite) were recorded in 3 holes drilled adjacent to the site of the old Moonlight mine (83WP6 - 83WP8), and the broadly anomalous IP responses in that area remain unexplained. Exploration drilling over sub-prospects stratigraphically similar to the Lady Franklin area (basal Hutchison Group) and at the Mount Dutton Bay and Lake Greenly aeromagnetic anomalies (29 RAB and 16 reverse circulation holes totalling 1004 m) returned no significant geochemical values. The magnetic anomaly at Lake Greenly was explained by amphibolites within the Sleaford Complex. The magnetic anomalies at Coles Point, Mount Dutton Bay, Salt Swamp and Barrett Lake remain unexplained. Reconnaissance drilling at Mena Flat, Marble Range and Salt Swamp was severely hampered by unconsolidated Tertiary sequences.
