In an area located west of Waikerie and adjacent to the River Murray, field examination of gypsum bed outcrops and the measuring of strata sections, plus shallow definition drilling (64 holes for a total penetration of 312 m) and backhoe trench sampling, have outlined a gypsum resource of variable quality extending over 4.5 km x 1 km, with an aggregate thickness of up to 3.9 m - this represents a potential resource of 10 Mt. However, the ground available for possible mining is generally limited by swathes of sand and sand dunes, which overlie the calcreted surface above the Blanchetown Clay wherein the gypsum bed occurs sporadically. These sandy areas may serve to increase to unacceptable thickness the overburden requiring removal, so they were avoided during the drilling programme. Much of the sandy country has been cleared for grain cultivation. Another adverse factor is the prevalence of topographic depressions representing karst features; due to such erosion of the gypsum bed, a very large part of the overall area otherwise having indications of promising quality gypsum must be ignored as not containing possible mineable reserves. In view of the above shortcomings, and the present lack of enough drilling data to use to calculate proven reserves, the licensee has decided to proceed instead with development of a gypsum deposit located on its Mineral Claim 2097 near Blanchetown, which recent similar work has shown contains satisfactory reserves to meet the company's immediately foreseeable needs.
