Possible economic epithermal/hydrothermal gold associated with the known Callawonga Creek tungsten deposit was the target of exploration carried out in an area of Cambrian sediments located 15 km south-southeast of Yankalilla on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Initial work consisted of the conduct of orientation and semi-regional geochemical sampling, which included rock chip (31), soil (33) and stream sediment (38) sampling, plus R mode factor analysis of the resulting geochemical data. This showed up some local metallic element associations, but indicated that the only significant geochemical anomalism, in gold (up to 2.8 g/t Au), tungsten, bismuth and arsenic, occurs in the direct vicinity of the pre-existing workings. Follow-up investigations over this area included 1:1000 scale geological mapping, grid-based soil (600 samples) and rock chip sampling, and the acquisition of four lines of dipole-dipole IP and ground magnetic surveys that were run across the best soil gold and arsenic anomalies. Only low grade gold mineralisation was indicated, principally at the site of the former gold workings in the south of the Callawonga Creek prospect, where it appears to be restricted to a limited system of irregular, narrow (<75 cm wide) quartz veins. The average gold grade is probably around 2-3 g/t Au, which was regarded as not deserving of further work. No evidence was found of any continuation or repetition of either gold or tungsten mineralisation beyond the extent of the pre-existing worked deposit. In addition, the geophysical profiles did not detect the presence any near-surface magnetic or resistive source body (i.e. a ?Victor Harbor Suite felsic igneous pluton) beneath the area surveyed.
