The Moonta project was initiated in 1959 and has been worked as a joint venture since the early 1960s. A large body of geological information has been accumulated, with factual input given by data obtained from geochemical exploratory drilling of ~ 30,000 shallow auger holes, plus deeper exploratory percussion drilling (339 holes for ~20,000 m) and diamond drilling (250 cored holes for ~57, 275 m). Project history, geology, exploration activities, statistics, metallurgy and details of significant prospects (Poona deposit, Alford prospect, Smithams prospect, Pridham's prospect, West Doora prospect, Wheal Hughes prospect) are herein summarised. A mineable (diluted) reserve of 206,000 tonnes of 6.45% Cu and 1.8 g/t Au was outlined at the Poona deposit.
