TARGET: Possible economic buried heavy mineral sand accumulations in raised beach strandlines within the upper Pliocene Parilla Sand, in an area extending for 30-70 km NE of Morgan and for 20-30 km N and NE of Waikerie. EXPLORATION: Aerial photo interpretation, regional sedimentological studies, and RAB traverse drilling along tracks on Balah and Canegrass Stations (345 vertical open holes for ? 4776 m along 4 traverses totalling 69.4 line km). RESULTS: Only trace amounts of economic heavy minerals were encountered, as estimated visually from drill cuttings panned in the field. Best intercepts were 4 m @ 4.58% HM in hole BL02/64, and 6 m @ 2.54% HM in hole BL02/108. The assemblages are dominated by iron oxides and ilmenite, as determined by microscopic observation of 44 samples recovered from nine holes drilled along traverse BL02.
