Possible economic Quaternary mineral sands accumulations formed along inferred palaeo-shorelines on the northern and eastern margins of Lake Blanche, or in the meander belt of the Strzelecki Creek, were the object of exploration undertaken by Aberfoyle Resources. After the conduct of photomosaic and Landsat imagery interpretative studies, helicopter-supported hand auger drilling (50 holes up to 2 m deep) was carried out at selected sites on dune ridges and along the bed of the Strzelecki Creek. Soil samples were panned on-site, and any showing visible traces of >1% heavy mineral content were submitted for heavy liquid separation of their heavy mineral concentrate. Samples from only five of the holes merited mineralogical determination, which divulged only low grade HM concentrations to 1.45% that comprised a modest assemblage dominated by ilmenite and magnetite. In view of the poor HM grades and the area's remoteness, it was decided to cease further work and to allow tenure to lapse.
