Exploration of an historic gold mining field and surrounding area located approximately 20 km north-east of Burra and situated due west of the Delamerian Bendigo Granite batholith has targeted possible unexploited fine-grained gold, thought to exist as syngenetic stratabound deposits that may have formed in Neoproterozoic intramontane basins during or soon after periods of basin subsidence and instability. Work consisted of regional scale bulk cyanide leach (BCL) stream sediment and rock chip sampling, plus the geological/structural interpretation of 1:40,000 scale aerial photographs and Landsat imagery. Sampling of known gold anomalous sites returned no significant gold values. The assay results from rock chip sampling of the old gold workings suggest that the gold previously mined has been supergene enriched in small, highly manganiferous gossanous zones.
