Gold exploration within EL 1390, located south of the Tarcoola and Earea Dam Goldfields, targeted possible Archaean greenstone - hosted gold deposits associated with later intrusive mafic rocks of high magnetic susceptibility, similar to occurrences found in the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. Basement in the licence area consists of Archaean Mulgathing Complex felsic metamorphic rocks overlain by Lower Proterozoic (?Lincoln Complex) metamorphics, Middle Proterozoic Gawler Range Volcanics (GRV), and comagmatic Hiltaba Suite granites. Known mineralisation appears to be Middle Proterozoic, and is associated with tensional fractures and Kimban Orogeny mafic dykes. Re-interpretation of the Kokatha aeromagnetic survey flown for SADME in 1978 has indicated a major WNW fault, prominent NW-NNW faults(?), inferred E-W thrust fractures, arcuate (stratigraphic ?) structures, and the Malbooma ring structure - an inferred Middle Proterozoic intrusive dome. The regional ENE grain reflects Archaean structure, and has influenced granite intrusion. CSR's exploration tested possible faults and/or areas of geochemical alteration indicated by the aeromagnetic data. Ground magnetics consisted of 14 traverses totalling 112.5 line km at Arcoordaby, Pidinga, Michelbar (NW-NNW faults?), and the Malbooma ring structure. RAB drilling (104 holes totalling 3547.5 m) at the Malbooma, Arcoordaby, and Pidinga anomalies revealed widespread quartzo-feldspathic gneiss (Archaean), with some fine-grained mafic and possibly diorite intrusives (GRV?). Gold assays were generally below detection (5 ppb), except for 4 holes at Malbooma, and 3 holes at Arcoordaby. Future exploration should concentrate on areas of intersection of Middle Proterozoic tensional fractures with mafic and/or reducing host rocks. Prospective areas are the Tarcoola - Pidinga fracture zone, and the Malbooma ring structure.
