The intersection of massive halite in the ?Lower Palaeozoic sequence in Occidental Petroleum's Mercury 1 wildcat oil exploration well drilled in the offshore Polda Basin generated interest in the Tuckey area onshore for potash associated with similar evaporitic sequences. A 17 km SADME seismic traverse which was recorded later across the Polda Basin within CRAE's EL 1054 indicated the presence of pre-Permian sediments. Subsequently, a 1398 m deep drillhole (Kilroo 1/83KD1A on line PB83-001, SP 338), completed in March 1984 by CRA Exploration on its renewed EL 1216, encountered 793 m of ?Cambrian to Late Proterozoic argillaceous red beds and basalts, but no evaporitic sediments were intersected. Stratigraphic correlations made with holes in the offshore Polda Basin and the Officer Basin suggest that evaporites, if present, would occur below the basalts at the base of the hole.
