TARGET: Now buried heavy mineral sands accumulations that may have formed within the Tertiary Parilla Sand as palaeo-beach placer deposits. EXPLORATION: Appraisal of SADME-held water bore data, photogeological studies, geomorphic mapping, reconnaissance shallow auger drilling (44 holes) and 2 traverses of RC aircore exploratory drilling (38 vertical open NQ holes totalling 1250 m) across Pliocene sand ridges. RESULTS: Visually assessed (after panning) low grade heavy mineral concentrations found within the ferricreted basal portion of the target Parilla Sand east of Bordertown were dominated by goethite. The targeted beach / shallow marine sandbar facies was only thinly developed, and was encountered at depths too great to be mined economically for the trace amounts of valuable heavy minerals that were indicated by detailed mineralogical examinations made on six of the better mineralised drill samples. No pre-Tertiary basement was penetrated by the drilling.
