TARGET: Possible economic buried heavy mineral sand accumulations within the Pliocene Parilla Sand in the Canopus area, ~60 km north of Renmark. EXPLORATION: Exploratory reverse circulation aircore traverse drilling and downhole gamma ray logging (245 vertical open holes totalling 5488 m) along roadsides, with holes sited 500 m to 1 km apart on east-west running station tracks. The drilling was conducted in two campaigns during August-September 1988 (139 holes) and September 1989 (106 holes). RESULTS: Minor, generally deep, low-grade heavy mineral strandline intersections were recorded (up to an estimated 1.8% HM) by drilling done along 12 traverses, but a portion of the area remains untested. Microscopic observation of the plus 75 micron grain size fraction of 31 selected mineralised drill samples having the highest Zr and Ti assay values out of 217 samples analysed showed that the HM assemblage is dominated by ilmenite, with much less rutile and zircon. However, the low assay values obtained for these samples indicated that the total amount of HM present in each is sub-economic, downgrading the prospectivity of the licence as a whole.
