TARGET: Gold in the Mount Finke region. EXPLORATION: A photogeological study, aerial magnetic and radiometric surveys, image processing of aeromagnetic data reprocessed by the BMR, a regional geophysical interpretation, ground magnetic traverses, geological mapping and rock chip sampling. RESULTS: Large tracts of ?Archaean greenstone and banded iron formation were interpreted from the aeromagnetic data to lie east and south of Mount Finke, which the licensee's research suggests have never previously been explored for gold. Christie Gneiss outcropping at the Lakes prospect is spatially related to a small gold nugget recovered from the bed of the western lake, and is overlain by possibly two unconformable units (Palaeproterozoic and ?Jurassic) with transported sedimentary origins. Stream sediment and rock chip sampling in this area returned only two results greater than 0.10 g/t Au. However, rock chip sampling of a quartz-feldspar porphyry intruding mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Mulgathing Complex at the base of Little Mount Finke yielded 0.35 g/t Au, while earlier sampling of Tarcoola Beds ferruginous sandstone and shale overlying altered granite and Archaean basement returned highest Au values of 1.47 g/t and 0.25 g/t.
