Of recent times the client Electrolytic Zinc Co. has sought increased reserves of ore at Crocker Well with a view to making it a profitable uranium mining venture. Although definite limits of ore reserves and grades have still not yet been determined, the company needed a basic feasibility study to be done on the cost of treating stated quantities of ore at various assumed grades. Accordingly, processing costs were calculated both for Crocker Well ore and for the nearby Mount Victoria ore as set tonnages over a 5-year period, for different relevant methods of ore beneficiation and concentrate treatment. From the study it was concluded that, even under the most favourable conditions considered for exploiting the two deposits, the possibility of achieving economic operation appears to be remote. From examination of the cost factors, the conclusion is reached that a minimum quantity of 5 million tons of ore containing at least an average 2 lbs U3O8 per ton, or a smaller quantity at higher grade, would be required before serious consideration could be given to establishing treatment facilities.
