TARGET: Permian coal in the Mount Toondina Formation. EXPLORATION: Sirotem and Mini-Sosie reflection seismic surveys, plus regional and detailed exploratory rotary mud drilling of 56 holes totalling 11,007 m, with 6 partly cored holes (511 m cored). RESULTS: Discovery and delineation of the Weedina coal deposit, which lies in a trough formed along the eastern side of the Arckaringa Basin. The coal-bearing zone includes six major seams ranging up to 8 m thick, with an aggregate thickness of 35 m. The coal deposit is flat-lying and is covered by approximately 140 m depth of overburden that contains the major aquifers of the Eromanga (Great Artesian) Basin. The declared mineable coal reserves in May 1986 were 449 Mt in the Measured category and 407 Mt in the Indicated category.
