TARGET: Possible economic buried heavy mineral sand accumulations in raised beach strandlines within the upper Pliocene Parilla Sand, in an area centred on Blanchetown. EXPLORATION: Study of Landsat images and topographic maps to identify palaeoshoreline beach ridges, plus RAB drilling during May 1989 (55 vertical open holes totalling 933 m) at 400 m spacings along four roadside traverses totalling 21.6 line km. RESULTS: Over the depth interval tested, down to 18 m, the drilling encountered Pleistocene to Recent outwash colluvial sediments overlying probable Upper Pliocene Norwest Bend Formation, an estuarine calcareous and argillaceous lithologic unit that was not considered prospective for heavy mineral accumulations.
