Continuing reconnaissance and evaluation of potentially economic Tertiary or Jurassic age coal seams, both known to be present in the Naracoorte and Kingston areas, has consisted of the drilling and geophysical logging of 92 open rotary holes totalling 7344.4 m (including a total of 32.5 m of HQ coring in holes SANR112 and 113), which were put down to a maximum depth of 153 m. Several Tertiary coal-bearing intervals 0.5 to 12 m thick were intersected between 30-90 m depth in 47 of these drillholes. Selected drill core samples of the coal were analysed for their specific properties, and the nature of certain sedimentary interbeds encountered in holes SANR199 and 238, and of a possible fine-grained altered dioritic igneous bedrock unit penetrated in hole SANR230, were investigated petrographically.
