TARGET: Possible economic heavy mineral sand accumulations in Pliocene raised beach strandlines developed along the south-western margin of the Murray Basin. EXPLORATION: Acquisition of an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey during November 1988, and image processing of the data, the conduct of exploratory and appraisal RAB drilling along more than 20 roadside traverses (1086 vertical open holes totalling 19,045 m), mineragraphic examinations and quantitative and semi-quantitative mineralogical determinations of composite drill cuttings samples, and metallurgical testing of a 200 kg bulk sample. RESULTS: A potential mineral sands resource aggregating near 60 Mt and averaging 2.9% heavy minerals has been delineated within the Mindarie prospect, located about 45 km north-east of Karoonda. Here three lenses of heavy mineral accumulation subcrop continuously over Tertiary strandline strike lengths ranging from 12 to 20 km, the lenses varying in width from 100 to 500 m, and in thickness between 2 and 8 m. Thickness of overburden ranges from 2 to 14 m. Further, disjoint lateral extensions to this mineralised zone are possible.
