TARGET: Possible economic heavy mineral sand accumulations in Pliocene raised beach strandlines developed along the south-western margin of the Murray Basin. EXPLORATION: Aerial photo interpretation, regional sedimentological studies, preliminary soil sampling, and reconnaissance traverse and grid-based RAB drilling (1621 vertical open holes totalling 29,282 m), plus selective infill RC drilling completed during July 1989 (9 vertical holes for 273 m). RESULTS: An Indicated mineral resource of 27 Mt averaging 2% heavy minerals was delineated at the Perponda prospect, which occupies a palaeo-beach ridge approximately 5-10 km long x 300-1700 m wide, x 6-8 m thick. The mineral sands have been deposited within two horizons, the lowest one now lying at ~30 m depth. The most extensive upper horizon contains two HM placer lenses each about 400 m long, that are surrounded by patchy, discontinuous HM mineralisation. The heavy mineral placer constituents seen in separated concentrates typically comprise 60% economic minerals, these being ilmenite, leucoxene, zircon and rutile, in that order of abundance. However, the universal preponderance of low value heavy minerals in sampled assemblages (from 50% to 90%), the occurrence's low grade overall (1-3% HM), and the presence there of a thick overburden, have all downgraded the economic potential of the mapped resource. Because the drilling density of coverage accomplished throughout both licences was deemed by Aberfoyle to be sufficient to preclude the existence of HM occurrences of economic size lying at shallow depths, other than the find of modest tonnage that had been made at Perponda, it was decided to surrender the ground.
