TARGET: Possible economic Pliocene or younger heavy mineral sand deposits in the Oakvale Station region of the north-western Murray Basin. EXPLORATION: Acquisition and processing of the major part of 33,000 line km of low-level airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys, plus reconnaissance and infill aircore/reverse circulation traverse drilling along roadsides and on a prospect grid laid out in the south-west of the licence area (95 vertical open holes totalling 3208 m). RESULTS: An assessment of the geophysical data indicated that widespread, deeply covered, low grade Tertiary heavy mineral sand strandings are present throughout the tenement area, but no evidence of in-situ surface occurrences of heavy minerals could be found from making anomaly field investigations that included hand-held magnetometer and spectrometer surveying. Drillhole logged mineralised intersections included one of 13 m thickness from 13-26 m depth in hole OK9, containing on average 1.6% heavy minerals (comprising 55% ilmenite, 12% zircon, 7% rutile / anatase and 7.5% leucoxene), plus other intersections in several nearby drillholes (OK6, OK10, OK22) with lower grades but ranging up to 31 m thick, and therefore probably comprising superimposed lenses of mineralisation. More than 80% of the examined heavy mineral grains fall within the 106 to 45 micron size range, and coarsen heading eastwards, suggesting that their source lies in this direction.
