Possible epithermal/hydrothermal and shear-related vein style gold, and Proterozoic and Cambrian metasedimentary-hosted industrial minerals, were the targets of reconnaissance exploration over a licence taken up in the Barossa region. 1:2000 scale geological mapping and rock chip grab geochemical sampling (22) were carried out at known historically rich gold prospects, while shallow RAB percussion drilling (50 holes totalling 207 m) took place near Truro over four areas of occurrence of potentially economic micaceous haematite and possibly useful cement-making shale. On average, 2000 t of tailings sampled from the historic Lady Alice gold mine returned 0.39 g/t Au. A single grab sample of micaceous haematite in Cambrian arkose collected from near Krondorf assayed 66% Fe. Several pyritic quartz veins were intersected in Lower Cambrian strata during the drilling, and samples of these were assayed for base and precious metals. Assay values of up to 12% Cu, 86 g/t Ag and 0.4 g/t Au were variously returned from the supergene zones of sampled lodes at Wheal Barton, and up to 3.3 g/t Au from the basal Cambrian conglomeratic sediments at Goddards Hill. At the drilled prospects, a potential resource of more than 800,000 t of cement-making shale was outlined within 8 m of the surface in the Heatherdale Shale equivalent.
