During 1990, a drilling program investigated the Proterozoic-Palaeozoic basement to the Murray Basin. Targets were selected to provide data on magnetic domains identified on reprocessed regional aeromagnetic data. Several hydrological observation bores were also deepened to basement, and a data base of all available drillhole information was compiled. Investigations reveal the interpreted presence of major mafic / bimodal intrusive and extrusive magmatic suites within the predominantly Early Palaeozoic metasediments of the basement. The Early Palaeozoic basement is considered to have high potential for hosting volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide mineralization, as well as for possible platinum group element mineralization associated with post-orogenic ultramafic intrusives, and for gold associated with both syn and post-orogenic granitoids.
