A combined sample of 6 borehole cores was used to study the reduction of soluble salts, mainly sodium chloride, in Wakefield coal by a process of water leaching. Practically all the sodium chloride was removed and other chlorides and sulphates were also leached out, but in much smaller quantities. The leaching process caused size degradation of particles, making a quantity of fines which were difficult to remove.
