TARGET: Possible Tertiary marine placer deposits of heavy mineral sands (ilmenite, rutile, zircon) on the south-eastern margin of the Eucla Basin in the Nunjikompita - Hiltaba area, 100 km east of Ceduna. EXPLORATION: A consultants' photogeological study of paleoshoreline features, and reconnaissance reverse circulation aircore drilling along 8 traverses (91 holes totalling 2020.4 m). The drillholes were terminated either in Precambrian basement, at drill refusal, or at a reasonable depth after having assessed any heavy mineral occurrences by drill sample logging. RESULTS: Only sparse, low-grade heavy mineral concentrations were found, consisting predominantly of magnetite. No definite strandlines were identified. Most of the area drilled is underlain by clayey sands, with interbedded silcrete and indurated thin sand layers, the whole often capped by a hard calcrete horizon.
