In a search for possible epithermal or sedimentary uranium deposits, plus any base metal mineralisation, in an area located east of Lake Gairdner and approximately 70 km south-west of Woomera, the licensee acquired a 6240 line km airborne magnetic/radiometric survey and later conducted geological mapping and ground follow-up of selected airborne radiometric anomalies, which showed that all of them are related to potassium-rich clays deposited in salt lakes, except for one associated with an outcrop of uraniferous Yardea Dacite. Exploratory percussion drillholes G1 and G2 (total 608 m) tested the mineralisation potential adjacent to a prominent buried fault that had been interpreted from airborne magnetics, whilst elsewhere, hole G3 was drilled to 300 m total depth to address another interpreted magnetic target where there was a probable thin cover of Pandurra Formation and Yardea Dacite over older basement. All three drillholes failed to encounter significant mineralisation, or to identify any prospective lithologies. Hole G1 penetrated richly magnetite-bearing porphyritic rhyodacite of the Yardea Dacite, carrying chloritic-altered ferromagnesian phenocrysts to 1-2 mm in size. Minor fluorite, pyrite and calcite were identified in drillhole G2 over the depth interval 156-158 m, in ?Wheepool Rhyolite tuffs and ignimbrites. Hole G3 was still within massive, un-magnetic Yardea Dacite at total depth.
