TARGET: Possible buried base and precious metal deposits associated with aeromagnetic anomalies, and also with either coincident or unrelated gravity anomalies, lying within a relinquished sector of the large contiguous multi-licence area that Western Mining Corp. had taken up by late 1977 to cover the Stuart Shelf region surrounding the Olympic Dam Cu-Au-U deposit. EXPLORATION: Delineation of prominent target anomalies, ranking of these anomalies according to interpreted structure and geology, gridding and drillsite selection based on results of ground magnetic, gravity and electrical resistivity surveys, diamond drilling (11 holes totalling 8077 m), and detailed physical and chemical analyses of drill samples, plus regional bottomhole temperature logging. RESULTS: All geophysical anomalies targeted can be explained directly or indirectly by the results of drilling and subsequent geophysical modelling. It was concluded that very minor mineralisation observed in some drillholes did not indicate any proximity to deposits comparable to the Olympic Dam orebody. The thickness and physical properties of post - middle Proterozoic cover precluded the effective use of surface electrical or thermal methods in definition of drilling targets, although various methods were trialled.
