TARGET: Possible heavy mineral sands emplaced within Tertiary sediments in the Wirulla, Poochera, Inkster and Streaky Bay areas. EXPLORATION: Reconnaissance 10-15 km spaced and infill 100 m spaced reverse circulation drilling to pre-Tertiary basement (164 + 48 holes totalling 5132 m) along road traverses, with composite sampling of drill cuttings for XRF analysis and heavy mineral composition and grade determinations, plus wireline gamma logging of 108 drillholes. RESULTS: Several continuous zones of very low-grade mineral sands were intersected inland from Streaky Bay, trending NW-SE over strike lengths of up to 40 km, with widths of 2-4 km and thicknesses ranging from 4 to >20 m. The heavy mineral assemblages contain a major proportion of zircon and ilmenite, a lesser percentage of leucoxene, and minor amounts of rutile.
