TARGET: Possible Tertiary brown coal deposits near Sedan, in the western Murray Basin. EXPLORATION: Evaluation of data as obtained earlier by SADM/SADME drilling and more recently by subject licensees Thiess/CSR from rotary mud vertical open hole and core drilling, with attendant drill core sample analyses and downhole geophysical logging [comprising data from 41 older SA Government drillholes, and from 239 new company exploratory/stratigraphic drillholes completed on the licence between January 1979 and March 1987, in 5 separate drilling campaigns; the latter comprising 26,071.03 m of open hole drilling, plus 1439.26 m of BQ and NQ coring, and also another 57.9 m of Caldwell rig 1-metre diameter coring]; preceded by the acquisition of sub-basin fill mapping gravity, resistivity and Sirotem surveys. RESULTS: Delineation of the previously discovered Sedan and Anna coal resources, and preliminary evaluation studies to assess their suitability for possible mining. An in-situ Measured plus Indicated coal resource at Sedan of 219.9 Mt @ <50% ash (on a dry basis) was declared in May 1988. 185.6 Mt of this are of Measured status. The Measured coal resource at Anna is 58.4 Mt. A detailed conceptual mining study for the brown coal at the Sedan deposit was completed by Coleman and Associates for ETSA and SADME during 1982-83. A proposed open pit mining operation was designed that could supply either a 500 MW or a 750 MW onsite coal-fired electrical power generation station.
