TARGET: Phosphate occurrences in the Mid Sturtian from Port Pirie to Marree. EXPLORATION: Regional investigation of the occurrence, distribution and origin of phosphate by mapping of known phosphate occurrences and geological traversing across Sturtian outcrop; detailed mapping and sampling of phosphate horizons near Orroroo. RESULTS: Two horizons of phosphate rock of considerable lateral extent occur near Orroroo and these occur in identical stratigraphic surroundings to the better-known deposits at Kapunda, Burra and Noarlunga, being closely associated with the Brighton Limestone. Investigations of the same stratigraphic interval were carried out near Quorn and in the region between Marree and Leigh Creek, but no significant phosphatic horizons were found by chemical testing of limestone units with the acidified ammonium molybdate reagent. It appears that the western and northern parts of the Adelaide Geosyncline do not carry phosphate concentrations within the Sturtian sequence rocks of more than background levels of about 1.18% P2O5.
