TARGET: Heavy mineral sands in Tertiary sediments of the Eucla Basin, immediately north of and extending to 200 km north-northwest of Ceduna. EXPLORATION: A review of historical data, the conduct of helicopter-assisted soil heavy mineral sampling and, on EL 1717 near Barton Siding, reconnaissance RC drilling (55 holes totalling 1168 m). RESULTS: Drilling defined anomalous areas in the foredune facies of the Ooldea Sand, but the potentially economically mineralised Early Miocene Colville Sandstone sand unit was not intersected. In ELs 1721 and 1722, a review of data and soil sampling results did not warrant follow-up. Therefore EL 1722 was fully surrendered, and an 800 square km portion or 32.5% of EL 1721 was partially relinquished early in May 1992.
