TARGET: Possible diamonds in the Mount Wedge region. EXPLORATION: Heavy mineral sampling, an airborne magnetic-radiometric survey, remote sensing Landsat TM plus aeromagnetic and radiometric data interpretation, detailed ground follow-up of more than 20 selected magnetic anomalies, and rotary air/mud drilling (17 holes totalling 944 m). RESULTS: Interpretation and selection of magnetic anomalies which might possibly be due to kimberlite intrusions was rendered very difficult owing to the active nature of the magnetic background. Despite the recovery of random minor amounts of kimberlitic indicators (chrome spinel and pyrope garnets) both in loam sampling and in downhole sampling, no kimberlite bodies were detected, either directly through the drilling or by geochemical analysis of cover and basement samples. A local heightened concentration of indicator minerals, apparently associated with drilled magnetic anomaly MW13, is presumed to have come from a secondary host in Tertiary and Quaternary calcarenites and sands, rather than reflecting a proximal primary source.
