In a search for possible economic buried stratiform copper sulphide deposits (> 1 Mt in size) that may have formed within Cambrian metasediments in the vicinity of the abandoned Wheal Ellen and Strathalbyn mines, an IP survey was used to define drilling targets. 5 percussion holes (total penetration 585 m) tested the resulting IP anomalies, and 668 bedrock chip samples were collected by auger drilling (900 m) and sent for geochemical analysis. 2 diamond holes (total 400 m cored) were then drilled to test combined geophysical/geochemical anomalies. Some sub-economic base metal sulphides were identified in the diamond drill cores, representing narrow mineralised pod intercepts from within three highly anomalous lead-zinc zones that are associated with pyritic, grey biotite-quartz schists which are commonly chloritic, and have interbeds carrying variable amounts of muscovite, chlorite, garnet and andalusite. Geochemical profiles obtained down the drill cores clearly show a partitioning of copper vs lead-zinc in the host lithological unit, although some extremely pyrite-rich (to 5%) bands carry all three metals together, with values of up to 0.21% Cu and 0.21% Zn being returned.
