An assessment was carried out by SADM of the feasibility of mining the extensive sand dunes in the Morrison Beach area, which it was thought could contain large quantities of low grade heavy minerals that might now prove economical to extract because of a recent improvement in the market price for rutile. 48 power auger drillholes totalling 1244 feet of penetration had previously been completed for Minoil Services during August-September 1963, to test the numerous sand dunes in the western part of SML 46 at a nominal sample grid spacing of 0.25 mile. Sand layers met with in the drillholes were sampled at 2 foot intervals for subsequent heavy mineral analysis, wherein 414 sample concentrates were point-counted for their mineralogical composition. The results indicated that the dune sands have an average heavy mineral content of 0.3% and thus may contain up to 660,000 tons of heavy minerals. This heavy mineral fraction comprises 19% rutile, 10% kyanite, 36% zircon and 35% other minerals, e.g. ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, tourmaline, monazite, etc. Although the results of this study indicate the presence of over 125,000 tons of rutile, the heavy mineral content of the dune sands is considered to be too low to warrant the mining of those deposits.
