The target of base metal exploration carried out over an area located 50 km north of Kimba was possible Broken Hill or Aggenys - Gamsberg exhalative type stratiform lead-zinc-copper-silver mineralisation associated with banded iron formations in the Lower Proterozoic Hutchison Group. 400 line km of detailed airborne/radiometric magnetic profiles plus ground magnetic surveys were conducted over a narrow 80 sq km strip of ground covering an embayment in the Gawler Range Volcanics, where the available regional magnetic data suggested that this feature might be underlain by Hutchison Group, although such a model could not be confirmed by geological mapping. An interpretation of 10.5 line km of new magnetic data, acquired along four ground traverses run south of the Gawler Ranges over several linear magnetic ridges of low amplitude, showed that all these anomalies could be attributed to either Middle Proterozoic volcanic flows or to dolerite dykes rather than to BIF units, thus significantly downgrading the potential of the area.
