Evaluation of the diamond potential of the Arckaringa area, 50 km south-west of Oodnadatta, which is here considered to be a region both tectonically and geologically favourable for the past emplacement of kimberlitic intrusive bodies, has comprised heavy mineral geochemical sampling of the basal Jurassic Algebuckina Sandstone present in stored drill cuttings from previous coal exploration drillholes, plus the acquisition and interpretation of ground magnetic surveys over prospective structures. Kimberlite indicator minerals were identified in 4 of the 134 drillholes sampled, the positions of which form a cluster near Arckaringa Creek, 40 km north-west of Mount Barry Homestead. The angular to sub-rounded pyrope grains seen have morphological characteristics that suggest a proximal source, perhaps within a 3 km radius of the drillholes, although all four holes do also appear to lie within an Algebuckina Sandstone palaeochannel developed close to the Mesozoic/Permian unconformity. No significant magnetic anomalies were detected at either Mount Carulina or at Mount Toondina, but a slight negative gravity anomaly at Mount Toondina is still of interest. The documented notable features and possible origins of the Mount Toondina piercement structure have been reviewed, and comments on their relevance to any likely kimberlite emplacement event in the Late Permian or Triassic are offered. Further drilling at Mount Toondina is recommended to resolve the cause of the evidently rather violent diapirism.
