Exploration for possible buried Olympic Dam (Cu-Au-U) style mineralisation, undertaken in the Welbourn Hill area by Newmont Australia Limited through its subsidiary Newcrest Mining, initially comprised the acquisition of ground magnetic, gravity and dipole-dipole IP surveys over coincident regional aeromagnetic and gravity anomalies. The survey results confirmed the presence of these anomalies, which were interpreted to represent a body of igneous intrusive rocks with inferred IOCG prospectivity. Percussion and diamond drilling (3 holes, total 955 m) did not reach the targeted Proterozoic basement because of drilling difficulties experienced while penetrating the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Only one hole penetrated beneath the cover and encountered Cambrian bedrock.
