Exploration undertaken in the relinquished portion of a licence area located north-east of Olary, searching for possible economic Palaeoproterozoic stratiform base and precious metal deposits, has comprised a 2526 line km detailed aerial magnetic and radiometric survey and geochemical soil, stream sediment and rock chip sampling. During the geochemical sampling, weakly anomalous gold was found when prospecting quartz-magnetite-sericite rocks outcropping in the Mount Bull - Calico Hill area. One gossanous rock chip sample with malachite staining assayed 1.87 g/t Au. Shallow percussion drilling was carried out in four areas near Shorts Dam, targeting the base metal potential of Pulse EM anomalies and geochemically anomalous gossan outcrops overlying probable Bimba Formation subcrop. Minor such mineralisation was seen in pyritic calc-silicate and albititic rocks. The best zinc intersection was 6 m of 0.24% Zn in hole SP8. Hole SP9 encountered 7 m of 0.18% Cu, and hole SP4 intersected 14 m of 0.10-0.27% Co. Another shallow percussion drillhole, SP13, was put down to investigate an exceptionally high lead value (2255 ppm Pb) returned from sampling gossanous ironstone float just west of Shorts Dam, but no anomalous gold or base metals were seen down to 19 m depth in kaolinised quartz-feldspathic gneisses penetrated beneath a 2 m thick laterite capping. A line of RAB holes drilled 25 m apart over a circular magnetic anomaly in the Shorts Dam area did not intersect anomalous base metal or gold mineralisation within either the quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, granitoid and schist country bedrocks, nor in an interpreted anomaly-central decomposed amphibolite or dolerite plug or dyke of short strike extent.
