Exploration of a Willouran inlier located near Spalding initially was aimed at finding low grade, large tonnage copper-molybdenum mineralisation of the type recently discovered at Anabama and Spilsby Island. Re-sampling of drill cores from 3 SADM diamond holes completed in 1967 on the northern end of the inlier (100 samples assayed) returned 95 ppm Cu anomalous groups, but no significant molybdenum anomalies. Follow-up infill and detailed soil sampling (138 + 52 samples) identified 3 localities, spread over 5 miles along strike, which have low order anomalous soil copper values ranging between 60 and 540 ppm Cu. These anomalies coincide with outcrops of Rhynie Sandstone, close to the contact with the Skillogalee Dolomite. Although better mineralisation may occur at depth associated with a possible igneous contact aureole, carrying out additional work at this slight surface indication was considered to be unwarranted. 5 rock chip samples taken from a heavily ferruginised silty sandstone to the south of Wheal Sarah were assayed for gold, but contained < 0.01 oz/t Au. A number of rock chip samples were also collected for petrographic studies which might detect evidence of hydrothermal alteration, but nothing of significance was noted. A further 18 bulk stream sediment samples from selected sites were checked for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Only a few garnet grains were found in one sample.
