Reprint from Australasian Oil and Gas Journal, July, 1961. Mesozoic-Tertiary basins are genetically related (associated with south tilt of continent and formation of modern continental shelf). Considers Saint Vincent, Murray, Gambier-Otway, Port Phillip and Gippsland basins. STRATIGRAPHY: Tertiary and Cretaceous described in some detail. Contour plan of base of Tertiary (80 miles per inch approx.). Brief mention of Jurassic, Permian, mid-Devonian to lower Carboniferous and Cambrian. STRUCTURE: 3 main elements (1) Interrelation of basin development with local highland evolution. (2) Control of structural evolution by faulting in the undermass. (3) Continuing development of southern basins as part of the continental platform. Individual basins range from broad downwarps to extreme examples of graben formation. COASTAL BITUMEN: Review of occurrences and vivid description of Geltwood Beach activity. Postulated movement from marine Cretaceous up faults to pressure Tertiary waters, thence to springs. OIL AND GAS PROSPECTS: General review of basins and sediments in each. Contains 60 mile (approximately) scale plan of sea floor topography south of Australia showing bitumen strandings and sections of main bores in basins mentioned.
