Report is attempt to fit together two reconnaissance gravity surveys one by BMR in Vic. (1949-1950) and one by SA Mines in South Aust. (1950-1954) which showed discrepancies along a number of common traverses - see graphical representation Fig. 1 area of survey outlined approx. by line Robe-Penola, Casterton, Hamilton, Penhurst Port Fairy and coastline. Comparison of the two surveys in the following respects: (1) Fieldwork and coverage; (2) Datum values; (3) Instruments; (4) Elevation correction; (5) Latitude correction; (6) Terrain correction; (7) Loop closures; Main source of discrepancy arose from errors both in the scale factors of the meters and in assumed absolute base values. Recalculation of the two surveys is then given, describing reasons for existing discrepancies. Final adjustment and discussion of accuracy of final result. Interpretation of data - (1) faulting apparent on Bouguer contour maps e.g. Kanawinka Fault (W of Casterton), Beachport Fault (or anticline?), Kalangadoo etc., (2) folding most of which is thought to be basement highs, large positive anomaly near Beachport, also evidence of folding near Kalangadoo and between Casterdon and Mount Gambier, etc. Gravity results indicate much greater basin thickness in eastern half of region. Recommendations for future work.
