AIM:To define a pre-Tertiary unconformity recognised in the southeastern, shallow water (Duntroon) area of Shell's offshore acreage using semi-detailed, long offset profiling of the continental shelf, and to extend seismic control northwestwards into deeper water areas across the continental slope (the Great Australian Bight proper) via a grid of regional reconnaissance, short offset dip and strike lines. Previous data from this area had indicated the existence of basement ridges at the edge of the continental shelf.METHODS: Survey dates: 18/11 - 28/12/69. Energy source: Tuned airgun array. CDP coverage: 2400%. Recording mode: 24 channel digital - Texas Instruments DFS III recorder. SP interval: 50.0 metres, group interval: 100.0 metres.RESULTS:37 reflection seismic lines totalling 4162 line km (435 km within EPP 5, 886 km within EPP 6, 564 km within EPP 7, 1206 km within EPP 10 and 1071 km within EPP 11) were acquired by the Geophysical Service International Party 948 M/V Polaris, and processed in Sydney by GSI Party 856. Shipboard navigation and line positioning was carried out by radar using Offshore Navigation Inc.'s Shoran system for the inshore survey portion, and Compagnie Generale de Geophysique's Toran system for the remoter Bight programme. During the R 4 survey programme three seismic refraction lines totalling 121 line km were also acquired by GSI in the northwestern part of Shell's acreage, with the assistance of M/V Saori as the signal source shooting boat, for the purpose of obtaining better velocity information in the Bight area. Further, a seaborne magnetometer survey totalling 1646 line km was run simultaneously with the reflection seismic work along sections of all but 3 of the survey lines. No formal interpretation report was prepared for the R 4 survey because the operator had planned it to be broadly regional in scope and somewhat experimental with regard to recording and processing parameters, thus setting a framework for later more detailed prospect definition seismic surveys, e.g. the 1970-71 R 5 survey.
