During its permit tenure the BHP/Esso joint venture carried out 6 seismic surveys and drilled 4 exploratory wells in attempting to ascertain whether commercial hydrocarbon deposits existed within the area. Although the geological prognoses established from survey work are regarded by the permittees as being proven correct by the well findings, the reservoir horizons intersected did not contain any hydrocarbons. In its permit surrender application the operator stated the belief that it had fully evaluated the permit's potential, thereby concluding that it was unprospective.
