Two drill cuttings samples from 2842 and 2860 feet depth KB in Apollo 1 (economic basement) were examined for their heavy mineral composition as an aid to stratigraphic correlation with Precambrian sediments found in the adjacent onshore. The well samples are coarse-grained, quartz-rich sediments with glauconite, garnets and clay. They are unlike Mesoproterozoic sediments from the Blue Range area which are garnet-free but have tourmaline and zircon as significant constituents.Four sidewall samples from the depth interval 2870 to 2900 feet KB and one core chip from 2932 feet depth KB in Gemini 1 were compared petrologically with various volcanic rocks from central and northern Eyre Peninsula. The sidewall samples are of a highly altered basic volcanic rock which is dissimilar to the underlying drill core sample, a calcite-rich igneous rock, and neither lithology resembles the volcanic rocks from onshore.
