Reports on the organic analysis of 10 coastal bitumens from 9 stranding sites between Cape Otway, Victoria, and Ninety Mile Beach. The Lion Headland bitumen is a weathered, transported example of the main type of bitumen washed ashore west of Portland. This data supports the hypothesis that the variety in chemical composition of bitumen types reflects a secular increase in the average salinity of the lacustrine depositional palaeoenvironment envisaged for their source rocks.
