Licence covering 21,079 square km granted 11/7/84: surrendered 11/4/85. Two reconnaisance geochemical programmes did not detect leakage of light hydrocarbon gases from petroleum fields at depth: 1. A helicopter- borne gas sensor survey over the Arrowie and Pirie-Torrens Basins and Frome Embayment failed to detect concentrations of light hydrocarbon gases in the near surface atmosphere. 2. As the sedimentary succession of the Adelaide Geosyncline is too rough for the helicopter borne gas sensor, 15 prospective areas were assessed by collecting 211 soil gas samples. None contained concentrations of the alkanes which would be consistent with leakage from a petroleum field existing at depth.
