35 samples of drill cuttings and drill core (from Dilwyn Formation, Curdies Formation, Paaratte Formation, 6 from Belfast Mudstone, 2 from Flaxman Formation / Waarre Sandstone) were examined for organic matter type and abundance and maturation. The source potential is fair, in spite of the abundance of organic matter. The Belfast Mudstone and Flaxman / Waarre Formation are thermally mature and the greater part of the Belfast Mudstone lies within the peak zone of oil generation. The presence of bituminite / bitumen and oil in several samples indicates that oil generation has occurred from this sequence. The shape of the reflectance profile and the temperature data suggest that the generation of liquid hydrocarbons commenced after the deposition of the Paaratte and Curdies Formation.
