Organic geochemical analyses were performed on 14 conventional core samples taken from the Epsilon, Murteree and Patchawarra formation intervals in Wancoocha 1 and on 3 similar samples from the Birkhead Formation in Wancoocha 4. The rock sample geochemical oil source characteristics were evaluated and compared to those of 4 crude oil samples recovered from DSTs 1, 4, 5 and 3 in the Murta, Birkhead, Hutton and Patchawarra formations respectively in Wancoocha 2, to try to establish genetic relationships between the oils and the rocks. The following conclusions are indicated from this work: - The Birkhead and Permian units are both considered to be poential oil and gas source rocks at the Wancoocha Field. However the Birkhead appears to be only marginal/moderately mature, while the Permian Patchawarra is approaching optimum maturity. - Pristane/phytane, pristane/nC17 and C30 (hopane moretane)/C29 (sterane diasterane) ratios of the oils tend to compare well with the Patchawarra. Also the oils contain phyllocladanes which are present in the Patchawarra, but not in the Birkhead. The Birkhead contains considerable amounts of isopimeranes and beyerane, which should be imparted into any oil sourced by these sediments. However none of the Wancoocha crudes contain any of these compounds. - The oils have maturity levels similar to those presently found in the Birkhead (marginally-moderately mature). This suggests a genetic relationship to those sediments. However it may be that the Permian generated and expelled these hydrocarbons when it was at marginal to moderate maturities.
