This report summarises basic data relating to the stratigraphic and geographic distribution, composition and recovery efficiency of Cooper Basin hydrocarbons. Their possible geological controls are discussed, with the aim of refining pre-drill estimates of the following factors which have a significant impact on prospect economics: 1. Sales gas recovery factors (carbon dioxide content and plant shrinkage factor); 2. Gas-liquids composition (ethane, propane+butane and pentanes plus, as bbls per MMCF of raw gas). Gas and condensate have been recovered from all Cooper Basin formations (excluding the Murteree and Roseneath Shales). The Patchawarra and Toolachee Formations account for the majority of discoveries and data. Oil is more restricted and is currently found only in the Tirrawarra Sandstone and the Patchawarra, Toolachee and Nappamerri Formations. Selected hydrocarbon data are reported as formation-specific values, irrespective of the economic status of the source well, but discounting cases of very small yield. These data underpin the analysis of the geological control of hydrocarbon characteristics, here presented in figure format.
