AIM:The 1980 Karawinnie Seismic Survey was designed to provide a semi-regional grid of data over the flanks of the Patchawarra Trough. The programme had two purposes:1. to outline Permian stratigraphic traps where Cooper Basin sediments have onlapped contemporaneous growth structures and/or pre-Permian basement highs, leading to differential compaction and bed erosion/non deposition, e.g. in the Merrimelia area, especially southwest of Mudrangie 2;2. to delineate possible Mesozoic crestal drilling targets near existing Permian hydrocarbon reservoir discoveries within large structural traps, e.g. updip of Coonatie 1. An unrelated objective was to detail the Spencer feature in the Murta Block and select a site for a crestal well updip of the dry Spencer 1.METHODS: Survey dates: 7/5/80 - 15/12/80. Energy source: Vibroseis. CDP coverage: 1200%. Recording mode: 48 channel digital - TI DFS V recorder. SP/VP interval: 200.0 metres, group interval: 75.0 metres.96 new lines totalling 1518 line km of 12-fold reflection seismic data were acquired in the Merrimelia-Mudrangie, Spencer, Coonatie, Candra, Patchawarra East, Patchawarra Southwest, Patchawarra Central and Yalchirrie areas. An empirical study of statics techniques commonly utilised for Cooper Basin seismic surveys was undertaken by partner SAOGC's geophysicists in conjunction with the 1980 Karawinnie data acquisition, to refine the criteria on which available methods are chosen, prior to that company (on a sole-risk basis) acquiring a pioneer three-dimensional seismic survey of the Cuttapirrie Field. Through field experimentation the use of the reciprocal refraction statics technique to derive a weathering model applicable to the whole of the Patchawarra Trough region was drawn into question, and it was suggested that other techniques may be better suited to certain areas.RESULTS:The survey has lead to the recognition of a number of new leads, besides upgrading many previously mapped leads. Further detailed seismic on leads such as Yalchirrie, Candra, Tooroo and Deramookoo is warranted. More importantly, the survey has highlighted the potential of the Patchawarra Trough margins for stratigraphic/structural traps. An inferred extension to the Coonatie structure was not found, but substantial rollover at VP 130 on line 80-JWB has indicated updip potential from Tindilpie 1. A well site for Spencer 2 was chosen on the western culmination of the structure, adjacent to VP 140 on line 80-JXG.
